Traveling to the Netherlands...Tips You Need to know before you arrive!
Traveling or moving to the Netherlands...Tips You Need to know before you arrive! When Tammy and I decided that moving to the Netherlands from US is something we're going to go for, there were some things that we wished we knew that would make our move to Holland as smooth as possible. Things like getting a European phone number (or a Dutch phone number), or figuring out the Transporation in the Netherlands, train, tram, metro or bus. As expats that was at one time new with the relocation process to the Netherlands, we made our fair share of mistakes and now we want you to learn from them to save you time and money. Are you landing at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam and want to get to Rotterdam?...we have you covered...stay tuned to know when the train will arrive and how much it will cost.

You can also book a three day stay at the hotels. One is build like an "old" dutch town. the entry for the park is than free. It somewhat like Disneyland where you also have theme hotels, like a western town. Disneyland is readily available from Rotterdam central. Take the hi-speed (Thalys) train: it stops at the entry of Disneyland Paris.

Sinterklaas was a catholic event. Most protestants did not celebrate it. Somewhere around middle november sint came to the town where you live and was greeted by the mayor of the town. Not so in the bible belt, there were no sinterklaas festivities. There were also no big festivities on Christmas because for both protestants and catholics this was a holy day, to remember Christ birth.

    1. You can vote now for the provinces and separately for the waterschappen. The country is divided in 12 provinces, an you can vote in and for the province you live in. In your case South Holland. The waterschap (or hoogheemraadschap) is the hoogheemraadschap van schieland and the krimpenerwaard. There are three administrative layer: the government, the province and the city. There is also a very old administratieve layer; the hoogheemraadschap. That is concerned with thing about watermanagement: keeping the polders dry, controlling dykes and bridges tec. They are a separate from the other three and exist since around year 1200. 2. Everybody over 18 who is a resident in the Netherlands can vote. Everyone also prisoners. Only people who loose the right to vote by judges penalties (almost never happens) or people under surveillance by another (mentally retarde e.g) can be relieved of their voting rights. 3. You can vote only for ONE name by making the position in front of the person red. You can't write anything else on the ballot form, then it will be invalidated. 4, When you are abroad (as a Dutch national) you can apply to vote by mail, and sending your ballot to the appropriate authority. 5. You can one other person autorise to vote for you. Fill in the crad and autorise it and give it to the person who will vote. 6. A person can only vote for maximal two others. For obvious reasons. 7. Mostly you vote for the first person on the list. There are same reasons to choose otherwise; like a candidate you know, or if you want yo give your vote to the first women in the list. 8. Names are put under the name of the party the represent. The reasons there are so many names is when an elected person does not take its seat for any reason, the next one on te list can fill in his place. If the list is exhausted the seat remains empty. 9. If a person get 3/4 of the votes or more that is needed for election he will get the seat. The first one on the list get mostly a lot more to get elected the rest goes to the next one on the list and so forth. 10 You vote for a party who you think best represent your mindset. Check the folders of the parties you are interested in. Remember: on those folders will only say where they stand on various issues. They will not guarantee you get what you want. 11. No one cares much about the voting for the waterschappen. They will do fine. That is the reason is is not very contested, and the vote is always together with the provincial elections. 12. All voting is in principal for 4 years. Municipal voting and voting for provinces are always after four years. When the government (coalition) breaks down, there will be new voting for the parlement. 13 You cant vote by mail. You have to go to the polling stations. The one you are assigned to, or others (in trainstations e.g.) 14. When there is an election you get an invitation. You need the present that form at the polling station together with and identification (a passport or driving license) So choose the party whose ideas you like. For instance the partij van de dieren is special concerned for the right of animals: decent living for chickens, pigs and cows. Against cruelty to animals etc. Or choose for a party who wants less foreigners to invade our precious country. Les Moroccans, or full is full. etc. There is a lot to choose from. I hope I have laid out the most importent rules.

This video is what you call making a mountain out of a mole hill. My parents explained that it is a test alarm, so we know it will work when it's really needed. And I explained it in the same way to my kids. Simple. When it goes off at any other time than the first Monday of the month, you go inside, close all doors and windows and turn on Radio 1 for information. Also explained that to my children. Simple

It is "stroopwafels:, not "siroopwafels". Stroop is molasses and siroop is syrup. And although Americans only know "Gouda' cheese it seems (but no clue how to pronounce it like Parmesan (where the "sjjjj" comes from?)), the Netherlands has over 750 different sorts of cheese, mostly named after the town like Gouda, notwithstanding jong, belegen, oud, jong belegen en oud belegen, graskaas among many other variations describing the aging process. But if American cheese is one's standard, what can we expect, other than understand the limitations and deficiencies and their (limited) perception of the rest of the world. I assumed you learned a lot the last 2 years. At least I hope so....
